Sri Lankan Community Celebrates Vesak at High Commission in London



The Sri Lankan community in the United Kingdom gathered in large numbers to celebrate Vesak at the premises of the High Commission of Sri Lanka in the United Kingdom at Lancaster Gate, London, in a colourful and spiritually uplifting event that brought together people from all communities and faiths. The celebration was held under the guidance and hospitality of the Chief Sangha Nayaka of Great Britain, Most Venerable Bogoda Seelawimala Nayaka Thero, and was attended by more than 300 members of the Sri Lankan diaspora.



The programme commenced at 5.00 p.m. under the patronage of His Excellency Nimal Senadheera, High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, together with officials and staff of the High Commission. Welcoming guests to the occasion, the High Commissioner highlighted the significance of Vesak as a celebration of peace, compassion, and understanding, while emphasizing its importance in bringing together Sri Lankans living abroad. The gathering was then addressed by Ven. Bogoda Seelawimala Nayaka Thero, who delivered the Vesak sermon and reflected on the timeless teachings of the Buddha and their relevance to contemporary society.



The event attracted a diverse audience representing the rich multicultural fabric of the Sri Lankan community in Britain. Members of the House of Lords, community leaders, and Sri Lankans from Sinhalese, Tamil, and Muslim backgrounds participated in the celebration, demonstrating the unifying spirit of Vesak. Religious observances were complemented by cultural performances, including a Vesak Bhakthi Gee recital by children from the Kingston Temple in London. Members of the NPP party. Members of the High Commission staff also joined in singing devotional songs dedicated to the Buddha, creating an atmosphere of reverence and reflection.



The evening concluded with a cultural programme featuring traditional Sri Lankan dance performances organised by the High Commission. Guests were warmly welcomed and enjoyed an occasion that successfully combined religious devotion, cultural heritage, and community fellowship. Participants praised the High Commission for organising a well-attended and memorable celebration, which served as a reminder of the enduring values of Buddhism and the strong bonds that continue to unite Sri Lankans living in the United Kingdom.
