Did Saudi Authorities Detain and Question ACJU Secretary General During Hajj?

The reported detention and questioning of a senior Sri Lankan Muslim religious figure by Saudi authorities during this year's Hajj pilgrimage has triggered growing speculation, diplomatic curiosity, and concern within sections of Sri Lanka's Muslim community.

Questions are now being quietly raised in Colombo, Riyadh, and among religious circles regarding whether the Secretary General of the All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama (ACJU), Sheikh Arkam Nooramith, was in fact questioned by Saudi security officials during the pilgrimage season and, if so, what exactly prompted the intervention.

At the time of writing, neither Saudi authorities nor the ACJU have publicly released a detailed statement explaining the circumstances surrounding the alleged incident. The absence of an official clarification has only intensified speculation.

Among the theories circulating within community discussions is whether the matter was linked to remarks allegedly delivered during a sermon, religious gathering, or private discussion touching on sensitive geopolitical issues in the Middle East.

Some observers have questioned whether references to Iran, regional politics, or broader Muslim world affairs may have attracted the attention of Saudi authorities, who traditionally maintain strict oversight over religious and political discourse during the Hajj season.

Saudi Arabia has long enforced stringent regulations preventing pilgrims, scholars, and religious leaders from using Hajj platforms for political messaging. The Kingdom views the pilgrimage as a purely religious obligation and has historically acted against individuals suspected of introducing political narratives into the sacred event.

However, at present, there is no publicly available evidence proving that any alleged questioning of the ACJU Secretary General was connected to Iran, political remarks, or any sermon delivered during the pilgrimage.

That has not stopped questions from emerging.

If a senior religious figure representing Sri Lanka's Muslim community was indeed questioned by Saudi authorities, many are asking why the Sri Lankan diplomatic mission in Riyadh has remained largely silent on the matter.

Was it merely a routine security inquiry?

Was it related to administrative or travel documentation?

Was it linked to crowd-control measures imposed during Hajj?

Or was there a deeper concern involving statements considered politically sensitive by Saudi officials?

The lack of transparency has created a vacuum quickly filled by rumours.

The issue arrives at a time when regional sensitivities remain high across the Middle East. Although relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran have improved in recent years following diplomatic normalization, ideological and geopolitical tensions continue to influence religious and political discourse throughout the Muslim world.

Within Sri Lanka, the ACJU remains the country's most influential Islamic theological body, frequently engaging on matters of religious guidance, social policy, and international Muslim affairs.

For that reason, any report involving the questioning or detention of a senior ACJU official abroad inevitably attracts public interest.

Several community members contacted by local observers have reportedly called for an official clarification rather than allowing speculation to dominate discussion.

"The community deserves facts," said one Colombo-based Muslim professional familiar with the matter. "If there was no issue, that should be stated clearly. If there was an issue, people should know what happened."

Others argue that diplomatic discretion may explain the silence.

Saudi security agencies routinely conduct interviews and verifications involving pilgrims from numerous countries every year, particularly during the Hajj season when millions of visitors enter the Kingdom under heightened security arrangements.

Nevertheless, until a formal explanation emerges, questions will continue to circulate.

Did Saudi authorities merely conduct a routine inquiry?

Was there concern regarding statements allegedly made during religious discussions?

Or is the entire story being exaggerated through social media speculation?

For now, the answers remain elusive.

What is clear is that the episode has generated significant discussion among Sri Lankan Muslims and prompted calls for transparency from both religious leadership and diplomatic channels.

Until official confirmation is provided, the matter remains a question rather than a conclusion.
