Coal Company on the Defensive Over Leaked Call Recording
The chairman of Lanka Coal Company has issued a statement regarding an alleged telephone conversation circulating on social media, purportedly involving himself, the company’s general manager, and a representative of a coal supplier.
In the statement, the chairman said that, in his capacity as head of the company, he had contacted the local representative of a supplier that had already been awarded the contract through the official tender process, and which had also received Cabinet approval. According to him, the purpose of the communication was to request that the supplier provide a performance bond issued by a bank, dated March 25 — the same date on which the relevant bank had issued the guarantee.
He further claimed that the audio recording of that conversation had been distorted and circulated on social media in a misleading manner, giving rise to various interpretations that do not reflect the true context of the discussion.
