The New Housing Rent Law Is Not a ‘Monster’ – Justice Minister
Justice and National Integration Minister, Attorney-at-Law Harshana Nanayakkara, stated in Parliament today (03) that the new draft legislation introduced on housing rentals does not impose any prohibition on the lawful eviction of tenants.
The Minister explained that the law only seeks to prevent the harassment of tenants and their illegal eviction.
“Creating discussion around a law when it is being formulated is a very good thing. It helps improve the quality of the legislation. However, when the discussion is driven by hostility, people try to undermine the purpose of the law without even understanding it. Not everything that is shouted loudly is true. Very often, lies make more noise. The proposed law on rental housing is also being subjected to the spread of such false claims,” the Minister said.
