Sri Lanka’s 78th Independence Day Celebrated in Grand Style at High Commission in London

London, February — Sri Lanka’s 78th Independence Day was commemorated in a dignified and victorious atmosphere at the Sri Lankan High Commission in London on Tuesday morning, with strong participation from the Sri Lankan diaspora, British officials, business leaders, and members of the diplomatic community.

The official ceremony commenced at 10.00 a.m. and was attended by representatives from the UK Foreign Office, prominent Sri Lankan entrepreneurs, community leaders, and a large number of supporters of the ruling National People’s Power (NPP) government.

This year’s celebration was notable for its unity, enthusiasm, and renewed sense of national pride, reflecting the political transformation taking place in Sri Lanka under the newly elected administration.

Multi-Religious Observances Highlight National Unity

The event began with multi-religious observances, symbolising Sri Lanka’s rich cultural and religious diversity. Religious representatives conducted prayers and blessings according to Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, and Christian traditions, invoking peace, prosperity, and harmony for the nation.

These observances set the tone for the ceremony, emphasising reconciliation, inclusivity, and national unity.

Presidential and Ministerial Messages

Following the religious rituals, official messages from national leaders were read out by diplomatic officers of the High Commission.

The message of His Excellency President Anura Kumara Dissanayake highlighted the government’s commitment to good governance, social justice, and economic revival. The President reiterated his pledge to rebuild public trust through transparency, accountability, and institutional reform.

The message of Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya focused on people-centred development, education reform, and strengthening democratic institutions, while Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath’s message underlined Sri Lanka’s renewed engagement with the international community and its commitment to principled diplomacy.

High Commissioner Emphasises Anti-Corruption Drive

Addressing the gathering, Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, His Excellency Nimal Senadheera, praised the resilience of Sri Lankans at home and abroad and highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to combat corruption, thanking for support received from the Sri Lankan community in London for the ongoing rebuilding efforts after Cyclone Dittwa.

He noted that the administration’s strong stance on transparency and accountability had attracted international recognition and restored confidence among global partners.

“The government is committed to building a corruption-free, transparent, and people-oriented system. This has already begun to earn international respect and trust,” he stated.

The High Commissioner also stressed the importance of unity among Sri Lankans, regardless of political, ethnic, or religious differences, in shaping the country’s future.

Strengthening UK–Sri Lanka Trade Relations

High Commissioner, Nimal Senadheera,  further highlighted the steady growth in bilateral trade between Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom. He revealed that recent tariff concessions and tax-free allowance arrangements had enabled Sri Lankan apparel exports to enter the UK market at zero duty rates.

He noted that the United Kingdom remains Sri Lanka’s second-largest export destination, particularly for garments, tea, and value-added products.

“These developments reflect the strengthening economic partnership between our two countries and create new opportunities for Sri Lankan exporters,” he said.

Strong Presence of NPP Supporters

A significant feature of this year’s celebration was the strong presence of NPP party members and supporters residing in the UK. They gathered in large numbers to express solidarity with the new government and to support the work of the High Commission.

Many attendees described the event as a reflection of renewed hope and political stability following recent changes in leadership.

Cultural Hospitality and Fellowship

At the conclusion of the official proceedings, guests were invited to enjoy a traditional Sri Lankan lunch prepared by the High Commission staff. The menu featured a variety of authentic Sri Lankan dishes, which were warmly received by attendees.

The meal provided an opportunity for diplomats, community members, and business leaders to interact informally, strengthening ties and fostering goodwill.

One of the Finest Independence Celebrations in London

Participants widely praised the event as one of the best Independence Day celebrations held at the Sri Lankan High Commission in London in recent years.

Many noted the improved organisation, positive atmosphere, and strong sense of national unity that characterised this year’s commemoration.

With renewed political leadership, growing international confidence, and increasing engagement from the diaspora, Sri Lanka’s 78th Independence Day celebration in London stood as a powerful symbol of the country’s determination to move forward with confidence, integrity, and unity
