ITAK’s Decision on the No-Confidence Motion Against Education Minister Harini Amarasuriya

The Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) has decided not to support the no-confidence motion that the opposition is preparing to bring against Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Harini Amarasuriya.

This was officially announced by ITAK Member of Parliament S. Sridharan during a media briefing held in Jaffna.

The MP emphasised that no credible evidence has been presented in relation to the allegations levelled against the Prime Minister. He stated that, in a context where the government has already indicated its willingness to withdraw controversial learning modules, attempts to remove her from office amount to political victimisation.

He further stated that while there may be broader criticisms of the government, ITAK would not associate itself with personalised and defamatory political attacks, particularly those directed at a woman leader.

Highlighting the state of education in Sri Lanka, MP Sridharan noted that the country’s primary education system lags behind international standards when compared with other nations. He stressed that comprehensive reforms in modern education are urgently needed, and that this necessity is a key reason why Tamil political representatives are unwilling to support a no-confidence motion that could derail essential education reforms at this stage.

  1. The significance of this stance by the Tamil MPs (despite some of their brutal past) is that the tribalistic roots and attitudes are visibly being changed and a more dignified political culture is being practiced instead.
